ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERING – HIGHLIGHTS

  • As a GLP member and Chair, I have been very actively involved with Provincial Ridings within Windsor-Essex chapter boundaries. I was successful in building strong relationships with all three local MPPs (Lisa Gretzky, Taras Natyshak and Percy Hatfield). They all have been strong supporters of PEO while in Parliament. Our relationship building resulted into the following key accomplishments:

    • Mr. Taras Natyshak, MPP supported PEO position on the Repeal of the Industrial Exception after cancellation of the repeal clause 12(3)(a) during the three debates on the Burden Reduction Act (November 15, 2016).

    • Mr. Percy Hatfield, MPP appreciated PEO while supporting Mr. Granville Anderson, MPP’s motion on declaration of March 1 should be declared Professional Engineers Day. Part of strengthening our relationship with local MPPs, I invited Mr. Hatfield to our flagship event Innovation Station Engineering Your Life where he spoke to students, children, and general public on importance of role of engineering profession in our society. Mr. Hatfield was impressed by the work we were doing to bring awareness of engineering in general public, and it was for this reason that he spoke in favor of the bill. Mr. Hatfield noted “Mr. Speaker, I have great faith in our professional engineers. I’ll mention a couple of them from my area. The leader of our local society of professional engineers is Asif Khan, who works for the Fiat Chrysler automotive group. The society engages young people by holding annual competitions for young people, events such as building bridges out of Popsicle sticks. It’s great training for budding future engineers”.

  • As chapter GLP chair met with several MPPs and honorable Ministers and presented PEO perspective on public policy and safety related to engineering. Cultivated and build successful relationship with several politicians and gained support for PEO in the provincial parliament.

  • Hosted several “Take Your MPP to Work” day events

  • Established and successfully led the annual flagship event Innovation Station - Engineering Your Life, which is an event launched in 2011 in the wake of declining number of students going into engineering programs. This is an event geared towards bringing forward public awareness and understanding about the engineering field to all audiences (outreach to almost 4,000 students and family members every year). The event won the top award at PEO’s Chapter Leaders Conference in 2015 and 2016 and continues to be one of the chapter’s most successful events.

  • As an expert in lean manufacturing concepts in my professional life, I led the chapter's very successful Learn to Leverage Lean subcommittee, which has provided free talks and tours to educate the public and engineering community about the benefits of lean. During my subcommittee chair tenure, I collaborated with the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at the University of Windsor, for developing an agreement that was signed on August 31st, 2012. Based on the agreement, the LLL subcommittee and IMSE became co-hosts for creating and presenting educational lectures on the Lean manufacturing practices, to students, faculty, staff, Members of PEO, industry practitioners and the general public. This relationship continues today, and is stronger than ever before, with thousands of individuals who are better prepared for applying lean at work, and even in their home life.

TV SHOWS ON AWARENESS ABOUT ENGINEERING: COLLABORATED, ORGANIZED AND SAT ON EXPERT PANEL

  • First TV show aired in February 2018:  Collaborated with Let’s Talk Cogeco TV, to organize a discussion on the topic of Math and Engineering.  The show concentrated on deficiencies in the Ontario educational system, specifically on the mathematics program offered to the elementary and secondary school students.

  • Second TV show aired in February 2018:  The second show focused further on mathematics taught in high school, considering its effect on enrollment in engineering type programs at the university and college levels, as well as the preparedness of incoming students for these programs.
